Il s\u2019agit d\u2019une forme d\u2019asphaltite, remarquable par sa solubilit\u00e9 dans les solvants aromatiques et aliphatiques, mais pas dans l\u2019eau. La gilsonite est noire, l\u00e9g\u00e8re et cassante ; elle ressemble au charbon, mais s\u2019en distingue par sa composition chimique et ses usages. Elle est souvent utilis\u00e9e dans des produits tels que les encres d\u2019imprimerie, les peintures, les modificateurs d\u2019asphalte et les fluides de forage, gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 ses excellentes propri\u00e9t\u00e9s de liant, d\u2019agent d\u2019\u00e9tanch\u00e9it\u00e9 \u00e0 l\u2019eau et de scellant.   <\/p>\n<p>D\u00e9couverte dans les ann\u00e9es 1860, la gilsonite a acquis une importance commerciale \u00e0 la fin du XIXe si\u00e8cle, avec des usages allant des vernis aux applications modernes dans les produits industriels. Les gisements de gilsonite se pr\u00e9sentent sous forme de filons verticaux au sein des formations rocheuses s\u00e9dimentaires du bassin d\u2019Uinta. Ses propri\u00e9t\u00e9s uniques ont \u00e9galement \u00e9t\u00e9 \u00e9tudi\u00e9es dans des technologies plus r\u00e9centes, notamment dans les composites carbone et les adh\u00e9sifs.  <\/p>\n<p>Il s\u2019agit d\u2019un min\u00e9ral unique, utilis\u00e9 dans diverses applications industrielles en raison de ses propri\u00e9t\u00e9s.
